Natsu and Happy inadvertently save Lucy after approaching Bora, mistaking "Salamander" for the fire dragon. Later, Bora offers membership of Fairy Tail to Lucy and invites her onto his yacht, where he reveals his plan to smuggle her and other young girls. Natsu and Happy rescue Lucy again and expose Bora as an imposter. Revealing himself to be the real Salamander, Natsu easily defeats Bora with his mastery over fire magic and invites Lucy to join Fairy Tail, which she accepts as they flee from the army. | |||

In Magnolia, Natsu and Happy bring Lucy to the Fairy Tail guildhall in Magnolia. Joining Fairy Tail, Lucy overhears a conversation between the guild master Makarov Dreyar and Romeo Conbolt to search for his father Macao. Unable to wait for Macao, Natsu and Happy decide to go find the wizard. Lucy travels with Natsu and Happy to Mt. Hakobe and search for Macao. They encounter a monster called a Vulcan and Lucy is captured. Natsu arrives and fights him, but is thrown out of a hole. Lucy summons Taurus to fight the Vulcan, but Natsu goes back into the mountain and inadvertently knocks out Taurus. Natsu defeats the Vulcan and find out that it took control of Macao's body. After saving Macao, the four return to Magnolia where Romeo reunites with his father. | |||

Lucy settles into her new apartment. Unbeknown to her, Natsu and Happy enter the apartment and Lucy scolds them. She teaches the two how a wizard makes contracts with celestial spirits. Lucy summons Nicola, forms a contract with him and names him Plue. She accepts a job to steal a book entitled Daybreak from the Everlue Mansion's corrupt owner Duke Everlue. At Fairy Tail, Makarov reviews that job has been changed to destroying the book and increased the reward. They arrive at Shirotsume and accept the request to burn the book. When Everlue rejects Lucy as a maid and insults her, the three infiltrate the mansion and successfully steal the book. However, Everlue, his maids, and his gorilla-sized celestial spirit Virgo, attacks the three. Lucy flees to the sewers, and discovers the book's hidden secrets before being caught by Everlue. Meanwhile, Natsu takes on Everlue's mercenaries, the Vanish Brothers, and defeats them along with Virgo. | |||

Kaby explains that his father considered Daybreak to be the worst book he had ever written, and intends to destroy it to protect his father's honor. However, Lucy reveals that the book contains a secret message for Kaby from his father as an apology for neglecting him over the years while writing the book for Everlue. To Lucy's chagrin, Natsu and Happy respectfully decline the reward as Kaby does not have as much money as he claimed he would give. | |||

She then climbs to the top of the Tower of Heaven and, after a brief battle, manages to pin Jellal down. Soon after, the Etherion fires on the tower which, to everyone's shock, is absorbed by the tower's true form, an immense lacrima crystal, preventing the attack from killing anyone. Jellal reveals that he had disguised himself as Siegrain using a magical projection of himself to coerce the Magic Cuncil into firing Etherion at the tower, thereby completing it. He tries using Erza as a sacrifice to resurrect Zeref, but Natsu arrives and rescues her. Natsu fights Jellal, but Jellal outmatches him, so Natsu decides to aim his attacks at the tower and destroy it instead. | |||

Natsu becomes infuriated with Jellal at the sight of Erza crying over Simon's death and eats a chunk of lacrima containing Etherion, which greatly increases his physical and magical power, allowing him to defeat Jellal and destroy the tower. Realizing that the tower's remains have now become unstable and threaten to explode, Erza decides to sacrifice herself to save Natsu by merging with the tower lacrima to control its power. | |||

Erza has a vision of her friends' sadness at own funeral and regrets her decision to sacrifice her life for them. However, she is rescued by Natsu, and the two escape the tower alive together. Erza offers her old friends membership in Fairy Tail, but they decide against it as they wish to experience the world without weighing her down, so Erza and her guildmates hold a farewell ceremony for them. They return home to find their new, larger guildhall finally complete and Juvia as a member of Fairy Tail; to their chagrin, Gajeel has also become a member. To ensure Makarov doesn't interfere, they create a runic barrier around the guildhall which prevents people over 80 years of age from leaving, which mysteriously affects Natsu as well. | |||

Poluchka appears in the guildhall to check on Makarov, who had collapsed under the stress of the battle royale, and reasons he does not have long to live. Meanwhile, Mystogan confronts Laxus at Kardia Cathedral to convince him to lift the Thunder Palace spell. The two battle until Natsu and Erza arrive at the cathedral and witness Laxus blast off Mystogan's mask, revealing him to resemble Jellal. After Mystogan leaves, Erza goes out to destroy the Thunder Palace while Natsu battles Laxus. | |||

Lucy persuades the rest of her guildmates, who remain bitter over their senseless fighting, to help Erza destroy the Thunder Palace. Meanwhile, Natsu fights Laxus together with Gajeel, but their attacks prove ineffective against him as he reveals himself to be a Lightning Dragon Slayer. Frustrated with his plans' failure, Laxus prepares to use Fairy Law to destroy the entire city at once. Levy arrives to tell him that Makarov is dying, but he coldly dismisses it and casts the spell anyway. | |||

After casting Fairy Law, Laxus discovers that the spell hadn't affected anybody in Magnolia, signifying he does not truly see his guildmates as his enemies. In denial of this revelation, Laxus continues battling Natsu, but Natsu defeats him with Gajeel's help. Afterward, Poluchka restores Makarov to full health. As punishment for his actions, Makarov expels Laxus from Fairy Tail. During the harvest festival's Fantasia parade, however, Makarov leads the rest of the guild as they bid him farewell with a gesture Laxus himself made as a child showing that they will always watch over him. |
The
first season of the Fairy Tail anime series was directed by Shinji Ishihira and
produced by A-1 Pictures and Satelight. It follows the first adventures of Lucy
Heartfilia and Natsu Dragneel of the fictional guild, Fairy Tail. The season
adapts the first 16 volumes of Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail manga series. Joining
the titular guild after befriending Natsu, Lucy goes on missions with him to
earn money along with fellow wizards Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet, as well
as Natsu's flying cat Happy. The five go on a forbidden S-Class mission with
Gray and Erza to save Galuna Island and fight Gray's rival Lyon Vastia. Shortly
after, the guildhall is attacked by their rival guild Phantom Lord, leading
into a guild war. After the dissolution of Phantom Lord, the group learns of
Erza's past as a slave in the Tower of Heaven and confront Jellal Fernandes to
destroy the Tower of Heaven. Lastly, once back at Fairy Tail, Laxus Dreyar and
the Thunder God Tribe stage a coup in Fairy Tail, but Natsu and the others defeat
him.
The
season initially ran from October 12, 2009 to September 27, 2010 on TV Tokyo in
Japan. It was later released on DVD in 12 compilations, each containing four
episodes, by Pony Canyonbetween January 29 and December 24, 2010. The season
was licensed by Animax Asia for a Southeast Asian broadcast. Their adaptation
aired from September 30, 2010 to December 6, 2011. DVDs of their adaptations
were not released. In 2011, Funimation Entertainment licensed the series for an
English DVD release in North America. The season was released in four
compilations between November 22, 2011 and March 20, 2012. The series also
began airing on the Funimation Channel in North America beginning on November
22, 2011.
The
season makes use of eight pieces of theme music: four opening themes and four
ending themes. The opening themes are "Snow Fairy", performed by
Funkist for episodes 1 to 11,"S.O.W - Sense of Wonder" (S.O.W.センスオブワンダー S.O.W Sensu obu Wondā?)
by Idoling!!! for episodes 12 to 24, "Ft." performed by Funkist for episodes
25 to 35, and "R.P.G. (Rockin' Playing Game)" performed by Sug for
the remainder of the season.The ending themes respectively used with the
opening themes are "Kanpeki Gū no ne" (完璧ぐ〜のね?, "Complete Loss for Words") performed by Watarirouka
Hashiritai, "Tsuioku Merry-Go-Round" (追憶メリーゴーランド Tsuioku Merīgōrando?, "Reminiscence Merry Go Round") by
Onelifecrew,”Gomen ne. Watashi" (ごめんね。私?, "I'm Sorry") performed by Shiho Nanba, and "Kimi
ga Iru Kara" (君がいるから?, "Because You Are
Here") by Mikuni Shimokawa.
